ht - yes that is him.  His children's birthplaces indicate his travels in SA:

Rietfontein - 1819
Bethany - 1821
Leliesfontein - 1825
Platberg - 1826, 1829 and 1832,
Grahamstown - 1831
Thaba Nchu - 1834 and 1836
At sea - 1838 - James returned to England for a brief respite
Salem - 1841

So, the picture I posted, what age would James be? Looks so much older than the pair you have posted.

The older photograph I suspect was around 1861 when James was Mayor of PMB.  I would hazard a guess that the one you found (I also have a copy of it) was therefore between 1861 and 1866 but nearer to 66 after he retired from public office.
