Thomas Smith Elizabeth Blair
« on: Wednesday 14 June 23 20:53 BST (UK) »
Hi,
This is my first time posting!
I have been working on my family tree and have come to an instant halt!

My 3rd Great grandfather was Thomas Smith and his wife was Elizabeth Blair. Her father was Moses Blair.

I have found alot on Moses Blair. However. With my grandfather Thonas Smith, all I have been able to see is that his father was William Smith. Found on his and Elizabeth's marriage certificate.

Thomas Smith was born in Wiltshire, spent a lot of his year in Derbyshire and then passed away in Yorkshire. I believe he may have been Romani Gypsy?
Has anyone else been looking for the same family who may be able to help me out? I'd really appreciate it <3

Welcome to RootsChat!

It really helps if you can add more information, like an estimated birth year and birth place.

From what I can see on the 1851 census, I believe Thomas Smith was born c.1824 in Malmesbury, Wiltshire? Although, in other censuses, he is consistent with Ashley, Wiltshire as his birth place. Genuki says that Ashley is in the hundred of Malmesbury.

Fidler - West Ilsley, Berkshire
Hamlin/Hamlyn - Long Sutton & Martock, Somerset
Head - Marlborough & Alton Priors, Wiltshire
Minson - Kingstone, Somerset/Symondsbury, Dorset
Owsley - Buckland St Mary, Somerset
Pyke - (West) Weeke/Wick, Pewsey, Wiltshire
Salisbury - Dowlish Wake/West Dowlish, Somerset

Several trees have his mother as Martha Church .Have not found him on the 1841 census in Wiltshire with any of these parents ,perhaps he had moved by then

Apologies if I am missing something, but I don't think that the 1823 baptism is Thomas'. A line of my family come from Marlborough, and it is quite a distance from Malmesbury.

Also, the Thomas who was the son of William and Martha seems to still be living with his mother in Marlborough in 1851, so he cannot be the man married with children in Derbyshire...

I don't know what 1851 census HistoricalGenealogy has linked above, as it is a non-UK link so I cannot manage to open it.
