Fort St George, Madras - employee or army records
« on: Thursday 15 June 23 21:34 BST (UK) »
I have these persons in my family tree.

Marriage of Catherine WILSON marrying a William CORBETT 12/4/1794 in
Madras Fort St George.
Ref British India Marriages Archive Ref N-2-2 Folio 231.

I would love to know more why these people were in India at time of marriage. What other sources should I be viewing online?

Thak you in advance.

Almost certainly connected with the East India Company.
And therefore a connection to the Madras Army, one of the Presidency Armies.

Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

FindMyPast India Records (image/transcript) - The marriage record simply reads -
Register of Marriages, St Mary's Church, Fort George
12 April, Wm Corbett and Catherine Wilson

Checked India Records births/baptisms but none recorded for Corbett, parents Wm and Catherine.
No India deaths to fit the pair.

Hi
William seems to have had a past
Fort Madras baptisms
William natural son of William Corbett baptised 7th July 1792

His son  Hanson/Harrison  Corbett was baptised back in Warwickshire.
Hanson Corbett s of William Corbett and Catherine Wilson 12.3.1806 Priors Hardwick
Other children there Charles  born  23rd/bap 24th  April 1797 , Catherine Elizabeth 28.10.1798,Thomas Frederick 20/25 July 1800 ,Henry 2/6 Nov 1802 ,Fanny 4/11 Dec 1804 ,Richard 1/6/ July 1809 ,Henrietta Maria 25/30 July 1810.

So not in Madras too long after their marriage

Possible discharge from the European Madras Army for a William Corbett could be him but no dates.

Ciderdrinker,
Well picked up. I set my search parameters for India baptisms post 1794 marriage - so naive!

Thank you all for your replies. Based on the aforementioned children in Madras and later in Warwickshire, it would appear that my Catherine did not marry Corbett or was a Wilson by birth.

I attach some links into the marriage between my ancestor James Heppenstall and Catharine Corbett in Thurlby by Newark.

I think I've to re-start my search for Catharine and tie up her marriage to another Corbett elsewhere.....
