Hugh Hughes 1823 Abergele - 1896 Toxteth Park, Liverpool
« on: Sunday 18 June 23 22:38 BST (UK) »
Hugh Hughes was a brother of my 2nd great grandfather Robert R. Hughes b. 1818 or 1821 Abergele. Robert's 1891 obit says that his brother Hugh was living in Liverpool.  The obit gives Robert's parents as Hugh Hughes and Mary Hughes (birth name) and b. 1818 at Berth (hedgerow in Welsh). There is no baptism record for the 1818 birth. Most trees that have Robert R. Hughes and a twin Elizabeth) show his parents as Hugh Hughes and Sarah Williams (no spinster after her name) from the Abergele Methodist Chapel baptism records b. 1821 at Berth (hedgerow in Welsh) and born at the abode of Hugh Hughes. It is possible that this Hugh Hughes, father of the twins, was a relative of Hugh or his wife Mary Hughes, who lived in the house at Berth.

The baptism of Hugh Hughes was recorded at the Methodist Chapel, Abergele in 1823 as born at Berth to Hugh Hughes and Mary Hughes, spinster. There is a short Berth Street in Abergele and it could be where these 2 boys were born. A tree of Hugh Hughes' (1823) family lists Hendregyda (Hendregyea?) as his birth place. Another post at RootsChat placed Hendregyea near LLanwrst and Abergele. I have not found this place nor Berth in online searches.

This Hugh Hughes is in the 1891 Toxteth Park, Liverpool, Lancashire census as a bookkeeper. Age 65 (1826). In 1851 he is in the village of St. George, age 28, draper and grocer.
In 1871 he is in Towyn Uchaf age 45
In 1881 he is in West Derby age 55, Clerk, Gas Company.
In 1891 as above
These records are from the England and Wales collection at Ancestry.

Descendants of Robert Hughes have small atDNA matches with descendants of this Hugh Hughes. DNA does not tell us how Robert and Hugh are related. They confirmed that Hugh lived at Towyn and died at Toxteth Park, Liverpool and his parents were Hugh and Mary Hughes Hughes.

Thanks for posting CaroleW.

A long shot – there is a modern Y Berth Glyd, Abergele which coincides with a small settlement, Bellan Cottages, on old maps:

Checking Welsh Tithe maps (1840s) for a "Berth" close to Abergele -
https://places.library.wales/search/53.008/-3.392/9?alt=&page=1&refine=&query=berth&order=desc&sort=score&rows=100&county%5B%5D=Denbigh&leaflet-base-layers_98=on

Click on Green Marker No. 2 on map - reveals Blue Markers 33 and 34. Click on No 34 for occupant at 1840s

To check Tithe records further

Tab down blue markers headed "Find on map" to find Nos 33 and 34. Click on "View apportionment" for No 34. After checking, back to 34 and click on "View map"

Thanks for the replies. I may be able to find a baptism record for Wm Williams b. abt 1824.

I will go back and look at the Tithe maps for the Abergele area. I did find that a Robert Hughes was a farmer of a small marshy area in the south of Abergele on the Tithe Maps. By that time (1851) Robert was a farmer but was living on a farm in Meriadog, St. Asaph city. The 1861 Census show Robert Hughes as a farmer of 40 acres at Trefnant and he shows up on the Tithe Maps there at the southern edge of Trefnant. This copy of the 1851 census is too faint for me to read. Robert's wife was Elinor LLoyd, b. Llanddulas. Robert and 10 of his 12 children immigrated to Ohio, USA in 1869.
