Williams of Red House Farm Blaenafon
« on: Monday 19 June 23 10:59 BST (UK) »
What an enigma, hope someone can help.

My great great grandparents were George Williams (born 1828) and Mary Ann Powell  from Herefordshire, I know mary Ann was born Clodock, Herfordshire and George is listed on various census as Crasswall, Lontown/Clodock and Michaelchurch Escley Herfordshire. The last information i have on them is the 1901 census living at Red House, Blaenafon (they were here in 1891).I can't find a buriel for either of them.
Last week i visited The Baptist Chapel, Govilon, Abergavenny looking at their daughters grave (Sophia Williams Phillips died 1945) and noticed very close to Sophia's grave was a gravestone for Arthur and Annie Williams both of Red House farm. Arthur was born 1873 and died 26/1/1959  aged 86 and Annie was born 1874 and died on 28/7/1949 aged 75. I can't find any Arthur Williams in my tree but i would imagine they must be related. Hope someone can help. best Ken

In 1939 Arthur and Annie Williams are at Red House Farm, Govilon. Here is a map:

The farm is at the left, halfway up, Govilon is upper right. The farm is about 5 miles north of Blaenavon.

In the 1901 census George Mary and James Williams are at "No 2 Red House" which is in the vicinity of Upper Brick Yard, Abergavenny Road, between Sunny Bank and York Terrace. In the 1939 Register this property is occupied by a Baldwin family.  So definitely not the Red House Farm occupied by Arthur & Annie Williams.

Alan thank you for the map as it now seems there are two Red House one on the Abergavenny Road, Blaenafon and one in Govilon.

Queenie is there an obit for George and Mary Ann by any chance?

Who is living at Red House Farm Govilon in 1939 and can someone tell me who is living at Red House, Abergavenny Road, Blaenafon.. I know that George and Mary Ann's Daughter Martha (Elliott) lived there in 1978.

Many thanks Ken

That's already been partially answered. Alan Boyd posted that Arthur and Annie Williams are at Red House Farm at Govilon in 1939, and I posted that there was a Baldwin family at No2 Red Houses Abergavenny Road in 1939.

Martha Elliott was next door at No 1 Red Houses, with Gordon and their son Ivor.

Gordon Elliott is described as a Coal Hewer. But there does seem to be farming involved - see the evidence given by son Ivor in 1983 (page 3 or page 16 depending which numbers you are looking at): https://acraew.org.uk/sites/default/files/uploads/Gwent/LAND%20CALLED%20THE%20BLORENGE%20NO.CL.18.pdf

Thank you Shaun for confirming that Gordon, Martha and Ivor Elliot were living at Red House, Blaenafon 1939.
I now have a fairly clear picture of the family. it would seem to me that George and Mary Ann were there in 1901 although living at no 2 and at no1 Sophia and her husband George Gilbert Phillips were living. By 1911 Sophia and her husband George Gilbert Phillips had taken over the running of Lower Cwm farm, Govilon. i have yet to find out which member of the family lived at no 1 Red house from 1910- 1933 when Sophia 's daughter Martha and here husband Gordon Elliott farmed there from 1933 .
Very much appreciated Ken Williams
