Roydon Dort (or Doct), Wortham
« on: Tuesday 20 June 23 10:53 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

Not sure if this is the right place to make a request about a place, rather than a name.

I'm looking for the location of a field, or strip of land, that in the 18thc was called Roydon Dort (or Doct) and was sited somewhere in the Parish of Wortham.  I'm guessing that it may have been to the north (near Roydon, Norfolk), but there is conflicting evidence that it was nearer to Magpie Green.

Any local knowledge on this place would be great!

Roydon Doits shows here on this 1885 map. Is this the same place?

I see there is a mention of "Dort" becoming "Doit" in reply #4 here:

The tithe map of 1839 has it as common land, 14 acres, in the occupation of John Kindred and others. However it is isn't named.

Added: judging by an announcement in a newspaper about the tithe apportionments, John Kindred was a representative of the local community to whom this land belonged.

Hi Maddys52 & AllanBoyd,

This helps a lot.  I think I can work out now where my site is (more or less) :)

Incidentally, the tithe map has it as the parish of Roydon, not Wortham.

Yes, indeed.  Its got me wondering if the chap I'm looking for was a Norfolk boy, rather than a Suffolk boy!

I think A look-up request is next.
