King Street Wesleyan Church Tunstall 1929
« on: Thursday 22 June 23 14:49 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out about this church where my grandparents married in 1929.
Any pictures or information would be wonderful- I cannot find it on a current map- would I be correct in thinking that King Street is now Madison Street?

Any help much appreciated

Thank you

The Methodist Church shows on this 1922 map, on King St (now Madison St). I'm assuming this is the Wesleyan Church.

I suspect this book has some photos, though there aren't any on the previews
"Tunstall Through Time" by Mervyn Edwards
https://books.google.com.au/books?id=G4-IAwAAQBAJ

And on British History Online
https://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/staffs/vol8/pp276-307#p125

"TUNSTALL, KING STREET (now MADISON STREET). In 1871 a Band of Hope mission, otherwise the Wesleyan Home Mission Chapel, was started in Cooper (now Jefferson) Street. (fn. 544) Although this was said to be still in use in 1876 (fn. 545) it was replaced by King Street Chapel and Schools erected in 1873 (fn. 546) and opened in 1874 to accommodate the growing population at the north end of Tunstall. (fn. 547) This chapel seated 850 in 1940 (fn. 548) and had 178 members in 1958. (fn. 549) The chapel is a large brick building in a Romanesque style."

Here's a drawing of the Church, how lovely.  :D

For interest (because I'm interested in architects ), the architect George Beardmore FORD was from Burnslem. Some info here:
http://www.thepotteries.org/people/ford_geo.htm

and:
"Others closely associated with Wesleyan Methodism were the Dean
family, whose members were on the Local Board of Health, the Ford
family of whom William Ford (dl885) was the builder of the Sunday and
Day Schools in 1850 and was Chief Bailiff from 1859 to 1860. William
Ford's son, George Beardmore Ford, (d.l9O2) was a local architect who
designed many of the Board Schools and a number of public buildings in
the town, he was Mayor for the two years 1883-85, having been a
councillor since 1878 and subsequently an aiderman from 1889. His sister
was married to Spencer Lawton, a potters' agent and valuer and three
times Mayor of Burslem, 1886-87, 1893-94 and 1894-95."

Thank you so so much Maddy- this has been the answer! And when I saw the picture of the Wesleyan Chapel in King Street I recognised it straight away from press cutting s from the Sentinel sent to my mother in the 1960s. this is wonderful- thank you so much. Just so sad that such a lovely building is no onger there. Interestingly i also remember my mother talking about attending Band of Hope as a young child- so it is all making sense! I live in Cheshire now after growing up on the south coast but am giving myself a walking tour of the area later today after visiting my grandparents and great grandparents graves in Tunstall. Once again , thank you so much.

Thank you Maddy- visited the site of the church at the top of what is now Madison street- it seems the church was demolished and the site was used for a working mens club. That has also now been demolished and there are some plain low level apartments on the site but the rest of the street still has the old small terraced housing descending steeply down to the junction with the main A50 road into Tunstall itself. My great aunt lived the other side of the A50 in Clive Street so I now understand why she was always so slim and sprightly- walking to church regularly up and down the steep roads would have kept her trim! I can also now appreciate the close proximity of the church to where my grandfather- William Bourne- lived with his family in what was Grosvenor Crescent, Upper Mount Street- Upper Mount Street is now Hawes Street- just 100 yards from the corner of King Street/madison street- where the lovely Wesleyan church once stood. Thank you once again for all your help.

You're welcome queenswood, it was fun searching. You're very fortunate to be able to walk around the areas your relatives lived, you really begin to appreciate their day to day lives.  :D
