The Barracks, Coach Lane, Fladbury
« on: Friday 23 June 23 15:44 BST (UK) »
I've just come across a 1939 register entry for some folks who are living at The Barracks, Coach Lane, Fladbury (Sarah Rollinson and her brother Thomas Ceney) although it's listed under Pershore, RG101/5817H/015/34. There are 37 people listed as living there, some of whom seem to be separate families. Coach Lane seems to follow on from Lazy Lane, but when looking at any maps, I can't see a building substantial enough for 37 people. Does anyone have any information about this place?

There is a newspaper article In the Evesham Standard from 1928 concerning a trial for perjury. The details aren't relevant, but some of the men involved are gypsies who were detained at the Barracks, and one of them is described as a "caravan dweller". Another witness is described as having been "pea-picking at the Barracks".

So, perhaps it was a camping ground of some sort, maybe for agricultural workers?

Another article from 1930, the Fladbury murder has the accused of Rushmore Barracks, Fladbury.

It's a distinct possibility that it might have been a temporary place to live during the fruit picking season: there's a "Hill Fruit Plantation" close by.

Another version of the Fladbury murder article has the address as Rushmore Barracks, Springhill Farm, Fladbury. There is a building just off Lazy Lane which appears on all of the old OS maps:

due east of Springhill Farm, near the edge of the map, coloured pink. This structure doesn’t have a name on any map that I have looked at. Could this be it?

It could well be. It's called Leasowes Court now.
