McDonough
« on: Friday 23 June 23 16:27 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm looking for more information, if possible, on Mary McDonough.
She was born in Sunderland, I think, on the 14th July 1856 as Mary McDunough, mother's maiden name given as 'Toughey'

I'm certain that I have found her in 1861 living in 5 Mariner's Lane, Sunderland with her mother, Eliza Treen (unmarried, born c 1823 in Ireland), Eliza also has sons, James Harkin, born c 1847 in Wakefield, Thomas Harkin, born c1850 in Sunderland, and John McDonough (McDonagh) born c 1861 in Sunderland.

I cannot find Eliza or her elder boys in 1851, nor can I find the birth of her youngest child, John.

Mary married a Thomas McKenna on the 9th July 1876 (probably in St Mary's, Sunderland), and the pair remained in Sunderland's East End, living firstly in Silver Street.

They had two children, Mary Ellen and John Thomas.

Mary died in Moorgate Street on the 23rd February 1929, aged 72 years - which would make her date of birth correct.

Can anybody trace her family prior to 1861 or Mary in 1871?

Many Thanks
Sue

1861 is Ellen, not Eliza.

I also think the surname may read ‘Tueer’ or similar which would fit more with ‘Toughey’ as you have - it could also turn out as ‘Twoey’, ‘Tuohey’ - several variations.
