Clive Street Tunstall- a long shot!
« on: Friday 23 June 23 16:30 BST (UK) »
I have vivid memories of visiting my great aunt who lived at 3 Clive Street Tunstall nearly all her life- she died in 1974. I was aged around 8 in 1963 and I remember her taking me to a pottery works near the end of her road and showing me where she worked, painting the gold rims onto white crockery. I have recently visited Clive Street and whilst all the terraced houses are still in situ, it seems that numbers 1,3 and 5 have been cleared and left as open space. I would love to know why those 3 houses were demolished as the remaining terraces look exactly the same as I remember number 3- and secondly, is there any way at all of knowing which pottery works would have been in close proximity?

Visited the family graves in Tunstall cemetery today and am really trying to complete my research to utilise what I can remember!
I have today also ordered a copy of the book Tunstall Through Time by Mervyn Edwards as i am sure that will be very useful but would appreciate any comments or guidance on my 2 questions.
Thank you

Here is a list of potteries in Tunstall. I’ve looked at a few, and they sometimes give an address: you’ll be more motivated that I am to go through them one-by-one!

Yes that would make complete sense- Annnie Bourne and her sister Hilda Bourne (both spinsters) lived there for most of their life and died there too. Is there any way of finding out what the clearance was for as it seems strange that it has not really been used for anything in particular. Would the opening paragraph 'notice is hereby given....' shed any light?

Thank you so very much.

Just looked again at Google Street View for 7 Clive Street and it is still just empty shrub land- a bit strange really.

?  This article mentions a HILDA BOURNE - not sure if it's your Aunt

In Gratitude

It was announced, during the opening of an American Tea held in support of Tunstall Nursing Society, that £10 10s. had been raised through the sale of an embroidered cloth, which had been presented by Miss Hilda Bourne of Grosvenor-crescent, Tunstall, in gratitude for the help she had received from Nurse Pepper.

Miss Bourne had herself embroidered the cloth.

Oh my goodness- this is amazing! I have never seen or heard of this! The parents of Annie and Hilda Bourne lived at Grosvenor Crescent, Upper Mount Street and Hilda was always an invalid in a wheelchair. so it is possible she lived at home with her parents till they died then moved into 3 Clive Street with her sister Annie at that point. I really cannot thank you enough for all of this help!
