MANSFIELD. List of publicans for station Street area
« on: Friday 23 June 23 20:13 BST (UK) »
Looking for more information on my 5x great grandmother Ellen Herrett (nee Wood)
1851 shes listed as a publican on Railway Side in Mansfield.
Iv tried to look on the directory for The Railway Inn but it starts at 1864.
Were there any other inns or pubs around this area at that time?
I believe the Midland Inn wasn't built until 1860s.
The previous street before Railway Side was Portland Row and the entry after was White Bean Yard.

Also I'm trying to find some information on a landlord I found whilst searching the pub directories and I need to try and connect this man to my tree as I have the surname and area in my tree.
The landlord for the Black Swan on Albert Street between 1864-1876 was Henry Quinton

Thank you

1841 Census
Isaac Herrett**, 49, Beerhouse Keeper, not born in county
Ellen Herrett, 55, born in county
Address - White Bear Lane, Mansfield

** - FindMyPast has transcribed given name as "Isaac". However, looking at the original it looks like "Jesse".

Nottinghamshire Guardian, 24 Jun 1858
Deaths
"At Mansfield ...; on 18th, aged 79, Ellen, widow of Mr Jesse Herrett, licensed victualler".

Age fluctuates somewhat between '41, '51 Census and death notice.

Hello... :)

Here is a slightly potted transcript of the entry for the Railway Inn.
There is mention of directories but it does not say exactly which directories the information came from.

Source:
Mansfield's Hostelry History - Nag's Head, King's Arms...
by Barbara Gallon with David Bradbury (1997) ISBN 0 9517948 2 5

Railway Inn (occasionally Tavern) Station Street.
The crude railway from Mansfield to Pinxton, opened in 1819.
Extended to Nottingham and improved for steam locomotives in 1848/9

1831 - Joseph HERRET listed as a beerhouse  proprietor on Belvedere Street.

1844 - Jesse HERRETT listed as a beerhouse  proprietor on Bull's Head Lane, now Portland Street.

1848 - listed in directory , landlord Jesse Herrett

1866 - 1903 - William Fielding was landlord.......

This MAP might help it is from 1878 and over time Pubs, Inns & Taverns changed name and location etc. - it is useful as you can Change transparency of overlay to see where they were on a modern day map.

Station St & the Railway Inn is on there....
