Hosfords, one step closer
« on: Saturday 24 June 23 02:34 BST (UK) »
I'm sure this all fits together, please tell me how!

This is what I know:
Richard & John Horsford's land petition states they they are British subjects born in Ireland, petition date is 1821, they have been in the colony for 4 years.  Land granted in St Martins, St John Co., New Brunswick, Canada in 1825.  A Nicholas Horsford bought land in 1825 and he later moved to the U.S.

Richard's will refers to "my beloved wife Euphemia", it goes on about his children John (1821-) my 4th great grandfather, Wm. Nicholas (1826-), Euphemia Margaret (1830-), Richard (1838-), it does not mention is oldest daughter Jane Virginia (1817-) but does mention her son "to my grandson Richard George Noble Davidson, a sheep".

John Horsford, later Hosford, wills his land to "with love and affection for my son Richard", in 1828, in the same place.

John Hosford (1791-) married #2 Catherine Burney in 1844.

Jane Virginia (1817-) Find A Grave states that her birthplace is Belfast, Antrim?

Then I found a death notice for John Horsford, born 1732 in Bandon, Cork, died Dec 1829 @98 years, and his oldest son died a short time since @73 years.  I think this oldest son is Richard's father John that died at 73 years in 1829, he willed his land to Richard in 1829, making his birth year 1756. This is all happening in the St Martins area.

Help me find this family in Cork, and why was Jane born in Belfast?

Forgot to mention their children are all C of E.
I also found an Arvilla Hosford (1792-1882) in Upham, which is within walking distance from St Martins.

I have found a mention of Hosford in the Tithe Applotment Books for 1827-1833
http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?surname=hosford&firstname=&county=Cork&townland=&parish=&search=Search&sort=&pageSize=&pager.offset=20

These may give a better idea of the townland that the family came from in Co Cork.

While Griffiths valuation records are a couple of decades or more after 1821 there are still Hosfords in Cork and in quite a few townlands

When looking for the existence of a family I often look in the Census records of 1901 & 1911.  You can often find the family who have remained mentioned on these.  I look for the oldest entries and then try to find their deaths/marriages and the names of children/parents.  There are still hosfords in Cork, quite a few and many are Methodists and Church of ireland.  Some of the names keep cropping up such as John, Horatio and Benjamin.  looking at these entries can confirm or give clues as to the townlands.

It is not clear if the list of children, including your ancestor were born in Canada?
If not then some of the marriages &  deaths may be found on
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/

Some records go back to the 1840s.
