Hamsteels and Quebec 1870-1890
« on: Saturday 24 June 23 10:35 BST (UK) »
My interest is in the Wesleyan 'society' in Quebec, including what Circuit it was in; and what local newspaper reported events in Quebec in that period (1870-1890), and if it has been digitised.

Some background, in case you don't have this, from the Whellan Directory, 1894 for Hamsteels Parish, and referring to Quebec:

Quote
The Wesleyan Methodist Chapel is a neat stone building of Gothic style, erected in 1873 at a cost of £750, to seat 400. The colliery proprietors gave £150 in addition to the site.

The Primitive Chapel, also of stone, was built in 1875, and will accommodate 300. The cost was £600, in addition to site, which with £150 was given by colliery owners.

The Methodist New Connexion have a chapel at Cornsay Colliery, which was originally built for the day school by the colliery owners, but becoming too small, it was given to this body, who fitted it internally to seat 400.

These are the results of searching Canadiana for "Quebec Wesleyan" (w/out "  "), date range 1870-1890 against Canadiana.

Thank you. Quebec is in County Durham. Has it some link with Canad (apart from the name)?

I’ve often passed through Quebec, and hadn’t realised what a large settlement it was in the late 19th century.

What a howler! I see now it's under "Durham" at top of thread.
Although I did get a Hamsteels "hit" against the Canadiana database.
