Hoping to find info about 976 Port repair ship R E

Hi all
I have recently recieved my fathers WW2 service history, he signed up in 1937 withy 2nd Battalion Middlesex regiment and was at the battle of France, and evacuated from Dunkirk. In 1943 he trained as a Lighterman B2 class and transferred to the Royal Engineers as a sapper.
he was posted around the IWT a bit but eventually landed with the 976 Port Repair ship. I have been unable to find any information on the ship, except it was transferred to the Tn 5 group.
Dad was deployed with 976 to NWE in july 1944, but no idea what he actually did there.
Hoping someone can help with some more info.

The collection features a 'most secret' diagram stamped 'War Office, 4th Nov 1943', for a '976 Port Repair Floating Workshop R.E. S.S. SIR WALTER VENNING'.
