1901 Census Relation to Head of Family
« on: Saturday 24 June 23 20:18 BST (UK) »
I have located a census record where the relation to the head of the family is “Help”. I’ve never seen this before. Does it mean the person was a live in carer or nurse?
The census record is:
1901 Census
Wendover, Buckinghamshire
Ethel Wright
Age 26 (b. 1875 in Dalston, Middlesex)
Relation to Head of Family: Help
Occupation: Left blank but someone wrote “dom” for domestic at a later date
The Head of the household was a widow named Sarah A. Jago, age 70 (b.1831)

Probably similar to what we would today call a home help.

Thanks, I assumed the job was a live in carer
