Seven children, only one baptised?
« on: Sunday 25 June 23 16:35 BST (UK) »
William Henry Burns (Window Blind Manufacturer) and Sarah Margaret (nee Davies) married in Birmingham in 1865. Six of their children were born in Birmingham, with one exception, Elizabeth Margaret Burns b. 9 Sep 1868 Chelsea, Middx - she was baptised at St. George, Birmingham on 24 Jan 1869. I cannot find a baptism for the other six:

William Jesse b. 2 Mar 1866
Helen Frances b. 6 Aug 1870
Robert Henry b. 24 Oct 1871
Annie Sarah b. 6 Dec 1873
Flora Beatrice b. 3 Jul 1875
Robert Arthur b. 20 Sep 1877

It seems odd that the only child they baptised (apparently) was the one who wasn't born in Birmingham .....I was hoping to find baptisms in order to confirm residence addresses.

Any thoughts would be appreciated !

Messrs Sparrow, Burton and Barker, wholesale haberdashers, drapery &c were at 12 Carr's Lane. Perhaps they had been supplying William with goods for his business?

The 1867 Post Office Directory of Birmingham has James Rodgers, boot and shoe maker, at 18 Great Hampton Row.

Thank you so much for this, I already had a couple of the newspaper items (relating to the bankruptcy etc. James Rodgers was the second husband of Sarah's mother Elizabeth (therefore his step father-in-law), but I hadn't seen the death's notice. That's interesting because my gg grandmother (the daughter of Sarah and sister of Robert Arthur) made a handwritten log of the family birth and death dates, and had put Robert Arthur's death as 21st October 1879 - but the newspaper announcement says " on the 14th inst. meaning 14th Nov.  A minor detail though, and only proven if I order the death certificate.

Poor Sarah had only lost another child of only 1 year old the previous October, and another of the same age the year before that.

The notice referring to 12 Carr's Lane, and your suggestion they could have been suppliers to William's business are probably valid - Sarah is shown in Kelly's Directory 1880-84 as "Haberdasher" at 19 Gt Hampton Row, so she continued to run her own business.

She was, in fact a fascinating and probably formidable woman, who went on to set up a 'Fancy Goods Repositories" small 'empire'  business with her children in Cardiff, Brighton and Weston-Super-Mare up until the early 1920s, and she lived to be 87.

I wonder if the remaining children were ever baptised though!

Thanks again for your help, it's much appreciated. x

Yes, sandiep - that’s my tree and family photos (thank you, I think they’re lovely, too).
Sarah Margaret was my maternal gg-grandmother.

In 1851 she was living with her boot/shoe maker father and family in one of the backstreet court houses of Birmingham, and went on to set up an apparently successful small company of Fancy Goods Repositories, before running a guest house in retirement. I wish I could have met her, she appears to have been an admirable woman!
Such a mystery about the baptisms, though.
