1841 census with birth place
« on: Monday 26 June 23 08:08 BST (UK) »
My ancestor is on the 1841 census in Kent, and the transcription page includes her place of birth. She wasn't born in the County but others residing at the same dwelling who were also not born in the County didn't have their birth details added. Why was this birth place included on the 1841 census, and how reliable is it likely to be?
Thanks, Rob

You say the “transcription page”
What does it say on the actual image?

Can you please post a reference so we can look at it for ourselves

The actual image only shows the normal 'N' to not being born in the County.
There is only one Sarah Sales on the 1841 census born in 1758. It is the Edenbridge census, piece 482, book 7, folio 6, page 5.

On Ancestry someone ( a subscriber) added the birthplace Rutherfield to the transcription back in 2012 and someone else changed that to Rotherfield in 2014.

"Added additional data not found on the record."

Odd that Ancestry permits this sort of thing. At least they put the information in italics with a pen symbol so that you will know that it is submitted data and may not be correct.

I'd looked the census reference up on FindMyPast. Looked perfectly OK, leaving me a little puzzled.
Thanks for the clarification.

Thank you all for letting me know that it is only "submitted data". I won't be treating it as reliable, especially since Rotherfield is NOT out of the County.

Very wise not to believe everything you see online, but you're discounting the wrong bit. Whether or not they're correct about it being her birthplace, if you're in Marsh Green (Edenbridge), Rotherfield is out of the county. Edenbridge is in Kent, and Rotherfield is in Sussex.

So it might be worth accepting this as a clue, but not taking it as fact until you've verified it and ruled out any other possibilities.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

My mistake, Rotherfield is certainly in Sussex
