No Rosie, last time we went with the bowls club we bought a platform ticket and watched  the children waving from the carriages,    it really was good fun, we also watched the tbe train on the turntable and spoke to some of the engineers,  we said next time, probably next year, we would walk to the station along the military canal  and have lunch there if there  is somewhere to eat, not sure about actually going on the train to Dymchuch as someone said there is nothing to see.
I do like Hythe and surrounding areas,  next trip is Whitstable.
Did you stay at Maddiesons Holiday camp in Littlestone?

Dymchurch is a small seaside town with a lovely sandy beach when the tide is out. There's a nice prom. There is a small funfair plus the usual seaside things, like fish & chip shops, cafes, pubs, arcade, gift shops etc. plus a couple of charity shops.

It can get very busy on hot sunny days.  Like many seaside places it can be a bit bleak when it's cold & windy.

Flashbacks! On holiday at Hastings around 1978 we took the boys to the RHD Railway- can't recall if we travelled on it, but much later, after the children were grown up, we went to Whitstable for a week and spent some time on a wet and windy Sunday on the railway, out to Dungeness and back.
My other recollection is through a couple of the Malcolm Saville books about the Lone Pine Club which were set in that area.

Yes we did stay at Maddiesons, you can tell your OH that we loved going there  ;D

Funny how children are encouraged to wave from trains, it must have been interesting to see the train on the turntable though. I hope that you were in a covered carriage Jeff  ;D

Rosie, you have a good memory, Mr Maddieson was my OH 's gt uncle

I met my husband at Hemsby  Maddiesons , no reduction for him.

He was one of the first to open a holiday camp about 1920  ish, 3 full meals a day,

I didn't feel as if Dymchurch was like it used to be a,though  the beaches are very good and safe,  my daughter aged 18 months was frightened of the sea until my lovely mum made oodles of sandcastles leading down to the waters edge, in no time she was paddling  helped by a hand either side.

We do have some very nice seaside towns

There was another Maddiesons camp at Greatstone, Golden Sands if I recall but I don't think it was for little children.

I recall that the sea went out a long way leaving masses of sandy beach at Littlestone.  I was born in Brighton so a sandy beach was a treat  ;D.   Must have another holiday on the Kent and Sussex coasts

Maddiesons did have quite a few, St Margaret's Bay was one i think was for adults but I have no idea why, was run very strictly by, think it was a major and his Mrs.

I took  my husband to Hemsby for our first anniversary, no takers, had to bring him home, almost 59 years ago,  kept him !!
