Whereabouts in Scotland?  When was their first child born?  Can’t see any births with those parents from 1840-1854.

No 1851 entry apart from a James & Janet Dalziel  in Dumfries who have children dating back to 1830

Where did you get your info from re marriage & Janet’s maiden name?

Thankyou Carol W for your reply.   I cannot see a marriage for them in England or Wales, so wondered if they married in Scotland.   They appear in the 1851 England census living in Birkenhead, both say born Scotland and with their first child Daniel also born Scotland.   Later children all born England. Later Census mentions James born Lanarkshire and Janet (Jessie) bon Midlothian.

The name "Sutherland" was passed to me by a family member.   I wonder if it is wrong.

It is possible that if they are not on the 1841 Census that either or both of them were married before.

Esp as aged 36 in 1851.
If Jane was married before she would be Jane/t ? at Marriage and English Birth Certs would have her maiden name on GRO

Thanks Trish 1120 for your replies.   Yes that is where I got the surname from "Sutherland" using the GRO mothers maiden name.   But I still can't find a marriage for them.   I did find a Janet (Jessie) Sutherland in the 1841 Scotland census.   So am looking for a marriage after 1841 until she appears married to James Dalziel in the 1851 England census.

Yes I saw that possible for her 1841 in Scotland also.

Maybe they never married or entry is not on line yet.

Hopefully someone else may be able to help :)
