Matty surname France to England
« on: Monday 26 June 23 11:43 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I'm just wondering if any of you brilliant researchers can offer information or have come accross any that i have not.

I've been researching the Matty surname (my family) for years and am very interested in this unusual name.

What I'm mainly trying to confirm and determine is when this name arrived in the uk from France.

My family line i can take back to mainly Gloucester, Worcester and in Ripple, last entries around late 1500's and I'm aware that they had links to Ardennes in France and stories of French/Swiss knights that possibly had Jewish heritage and/or were Huguenots fleeing Catholic persecution.

I know I'm lucky to have gone back this far as many do not, but it's a story and search subject that has gripped me.

So the question is, can anyone out there help link this family name to France and further back?

Any help from French researchers would be greatly received as i seem to have exhausted most avenues in the uk.

Kind regards.

Difficult with out more info - a quick look here:

came up with quite a few Mattys (and variants) for Switzerland and over the border into France.

Do you have an ancestor who you think came from France that could help us narrow down the search?

For the Swiss part of your quest, a good starting point is to try and narrow down the place of origin of the family name. This website is the tool to do that: https://hls-dhs-dss.ch/famn/index.php?lg=e
Enter ‘Matty’ in the surname box and there’s one hit which is far too recent to match your story.
So, next step enter ‘Matt’ and see what happens! Lots and lots of potential variants. No help at all ☹️
It could be that the name has changed over time, as Manukarik has said.

Thats brilliant!
I've not come across the geneanet site and links before so will have a good rummage through them. There's a wealth of information there to verify and cross reference.

Thank you Manukarik and jogger.

Thank you too pb_devon. I'll check that out too. I know some of the earliest English variants are often in Latin via bishop's transcripts and crown/government documents and transcribed as Matti and Mattee, so worth a try there too.

Best wishes all.

Thank you PP for coming back.
If you need further guidance with the Swiss element of your research, then there are a few here with knowledge who can help.
The same also applies for France.
