Margaret GOODWIN
« on: Monday 26 June 23 19:08 BST (UK) »
Margaret GOODWIN of Kingsley married James ALCOCK of Cheadle on 02 June 1800, in Cheadle.

James was bap 31 Dec 1775 in Cheadle, but what about Margaret?

The only possibility I can find was bap in Kingsley on 28 Nov ???? possibly around the right time. Her father's name in the PR entry is almost illegible. I think it might be William.

In the late 1770's, fathers presenting GOODWIN children for baptism were George, John, Thomas and William. To my eye, the name in the PR looks more like William than any of the others, but I'm not happy by the way it ends.

Can anyone help, please?

This is their marriage:

James ALCOCK & Margaret GOODWIN - June 2nd, 1800
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01sey/

This is Margaret’s Burial (Not Death):

Margaret ALCOCK - December 14th, 1837
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01sez/

If you look at both records but on ancestry, they have their religion listed as Anglican. This is important to finding Margaret’s baptism. On Margaret’s Death Record, it says she was born (from her age) around 1768.

You have found her baptism record. As it has no year on it, we have to look for the same record on other places.

Unfortunately, it has the year 1640 which is more than a century before 1768 (could be 1769).

Margaret GODWIN - November 28th, 1640 Kingsley

If you look for births with the name Margaret Goodwin (similar names too), you can find her Baptism:

Margreat GOODWIN - December 17th, 1769 Kingsley
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01sf1/
*this is on ancestry.com

It lists her parents as John & Mary Goodwin.

This is their Marriage Record:

John GOODWIN & Mary STEVENSON - June 14th, 1759 Kingsley, St Werburgh
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01sf2/
*also on ancestry.com

This is John’s Baptism:

John GOODWYN - April 7th, 1740 Kingsley, St Werburgh
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01sf3/

This is his Burial:

John GOODWIN - March 22nd, 1808 Kingsley, St Werburgh
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01sf4/

Mary’s Baptism:

Mary STEVENSON - February 1740 Kingsley, St Werburgh
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01sf6/

Mary’s Burial:

Mary GOODWIN - April 22nd, 1811 Kingsley, St Werburgh

I agree, that ending doesn’t look like an M does it. I’m trying to find a similar ending. Failing so far

Thank you, both.

If the record I have of Margaret's baptism on 28 Nov ???? is actually from the year 1640, that would explain the decrepit state of the PR and also mean that it's about 4 generations too early for my immediate needs, and the deciphering of the father's name is no longer relevant, so that's sorted.

The burial of Margaret ALCOCK in 1837 explains why she is missing from the '41, and her age confirms my suspicion that the younger James listed thereon (b 1838) is the grandson of the elder James.

A birth in 1769 means she was about 31 when she married, so was she a widow? Fortunately, in the PR she is clearly described as a 'single woman', so I can ignore that possible complication and accept that you have found the lady I sought and have provided me with much detail on her background.

Very many thanks.

Thanks, Trish.

Yes, I have those baptisms.

I didn't know if young James was born to one of the girls or even one of the boys, so that's very useful information. Also those two burials.

Thanks, again
