Wales & McCulloch Ltd
« on: Monday 26 June 23 23:18 BST (UK) »
Hello!

I'm researching this London Victorian retailer established in 1853 with a goal of finding out who the "McCulloch" was. The business traded for about 70 years near St Paul's. You can read my current research journey at https://blog.mcculloch.scot/2021/02/wales-mcculloch.html.

Any information about the founding of the company would be of particular interest. I've also contacted Companies House (no records beyond last 20 years) and National Archives (pending response).

Many thanks and best wishes,
Neil

Neil,

Since you seem to be interested in all things Mc/MacCulloch, are you aware of a present day business called MacCulloch and Wallis located at 25-26 Poland Street London W1F 8QN. They deal in haberdashery and trimmings etc. Website here: https://www.macculloch-wallis.co.uk/

Thanks Andy!
I have not come across MacCulloch and Wallis before! I probably walked past their shop many times when I worked in the area. Thanks for a new line of enquiry :)
Best wishes,
Neil

Liverpool Evening Express 25 June 1906 and the Birmingham Daily Post

Wills
Mr. Henry Charles Wales 52 of Broxbourne, Herts and of the firm Wales and McCulloch, London Silversmiths and Jewelers.

I didn't read the whole blog so I expect you know of Henry Charles Wales, although at 52 he must be a descendant of the original Mr. Wales

Will Index

William McCulloch the younger of 32 Ludgate Street City of London, Silversmith, who died 22 April 1858 at Stowlangtoft Road, Highbury in the County of Middlesex, was proved  at the Principal Registry by the oaths of  Charles Alexander McCulloch of 70 Chester Square in the said County seedsman, the Brother and Thomas Moring of 44 High Holborn in the same county Engraver the executors.

He was one of the McCulloch's, perhaps his father was before him? The will might give an indication as to who he left his part of the business.

Charles Alexander McCulloch married Jane Margaret Mariner 6 January 1847 Christ Church Southwark
His father William - Druggist
Her father William Charles Mariner - Stock Broker

1851 census St George Hanover Square
Charles McCulloch 33 Herbalist and Seedsman born London
Margaret    wife 23 born Stepney

His father William was a Druggist on the marriage certificate,  but at least the Seedsman description matches that of the probate for his brother William McCulloch the silver smith

Thanks so much! How very interesting since it would seem that:

William McCulloch the younger of 32 Ludgate Street (also near the retail address) for W&M (https://blog.mcculloch.scot/2021/02/wales-mcculloch.html) was the brother of Charles McCulloch, seedsmen of Butler & McCulloch (https://blog.mcculloch.scot/2023/06/butler-mcculloch.html). I had thought there was a fair chance of relation since McCulloch is only common in those times in Wigtownshire, Scotland.

It is a bit of a leap - perhaps there could be 2 x McCulloch seedsmen in London. I don't know the first names of the McCulloch proprietor of Butler & McCulloch yet.

In Scotland:-
McCulloch, Saunders, Sanders, Sanderson, Saunderson, Anderson, Ward, Graham
In England:-
Lovell, Ward, Didmon, Harman
