Hi

You haven't given any details of a timescale or which particular Cartwright family you are researching.  Without that info - you can see the problems from the figures below.  For anybody to make any connection you need to give more info

The Scottish 1901 census has 164 entries for that surname

Irish 1911 also 164 entries

The 1911 English census has 15,547 entries

Welsh 1911 545 entries
Census Information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk
Carlin (Ireland & Liverpool) Doughty & Wright (Liverpool) Dick & Park (Scotland & Liverpool)

Given the commonality in England - many could have the surname in their FH but not necessarily connected to your own Cartwrights.

You mention Celtic origins so I did another census search using birthplaces Scotland & Ireland which may (or may not) help you

1901 Scotland - 113 born Scotland 5 b Ireland
1911 England - 54 b Scotland  40 b Ireland
1911 Wales - 2 b Scotland - none b Ireland

ok, I know they are from Staffordshire in 17-1800. NOT celtic… found the name identified in celtic traveller msgboard w staffordshire being their origin, but there are a lot of cartwrights… better than nothing!
