John Campbell born about 1743 Anstruther
« on: Thursday 29 June 23 05:37 BST (UK) »
Unsure whether I am on correct site.

The attached found on FamilySearch describes a man born about 1743 at Anstruther, Fife, last residence East Smithfield (Fife?) who served on his last ship "Leander" in the Royal Navy.

Reference: England, Military Pensions and Service Records, 1703-1933.

Trying to find information, Wife, parents etc
Kind regards

There are 3 John Campbell birth/baptism records in Fife 1741 - 1745 on  https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk it is the only site for original records, free to search a small fee to view, as you may know. Two are quite distant from Anstruther, the other below is 6 or 7 miles away.

JOHN CAMPBELL 9/07/1745
GEORGE CAMPBELL/JEAN WILSON
CAMERON, FIFE

However it is quite a common name. Do you have any further information?

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

East Smithfiled, John's last place of residence, is in London (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Smithfield).

Also, quite possibly none of the three John Campbell births/baptisms cited here will be the one you are looking for. His parents might not have presented your John Campbell for baptism and so he would not appear in any contemporary records. And was he really born in Anstruther? Did his parents tell him where he was born, or did he think that was where he was born, just because Anstruther was part of his earliest memories. Yes, that sort of thing does happen!
