Aver(h)ilda Oxley of Doncaster
« on: Thursday 29 June 23 14:38 BST (UK) »
I have an Aver(h)ilda Oxley b.1892 Doncaster married to a James H. Cartwright in 09/1911 in Barnsley. There's an Averhilda Cartwright marrying in 1917 to Joseph Collins in Huddersfield, and an Averhilda Cartwright marrying in Low Valley in 1948 to a Thomas Swift.

I can't find Aver(h)ilda Oxley on the 1901 or 1911 censuses, nor on the 1921 or 1939 censuses as Averhilda Collins, if indeed they are the same person. I even tried Oxley and Cartwright as an afterthought, still nothing. How does someone avoid all those censuses, and does anyone know of any other sources I could try to find her, and her parents/siblings.?

Thank you in advance.

The Averhilda Cartwright who married Joseph Collins in 1917 died in 1958 aged 61, so she can't be the one born in 1892, as she'd be 6 years too young.

Averhilda is on the 1939 register with her husband, James H Cartwright. If you have Anc*, here is the link:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01sfk/

If not, search 'James H Cartwright', born c.1886 and click the entry for the man living in Deane, Yorkshire.

The register confirms that she later married a Swift.

She died as Averilda Swift in 1970 in Don Valley, Yorkshire.

@QueenoftheWest, thank you so much..  :) That's a big help. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't find her. I don't understand why she didn't show on the 1939 census on FindMyPast.

I just found them on FindMyPast and this is surely the worst transcription ever!:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01sfm/

Cartwright is Bathwin? and Averhilda is just '??'

Looks like they had a son called Fred in Ardsley, Yorkshire in 1913. His parents are 'James Haigh', miner, and 'Hilda'.

Still can't find Averhilda and James in 1921, but I believe their son Fred is with his grandmother Martha Ann Hirst (née Cartwright) in Ardsley West.

Would you still like help finding Averhilda's family?

Her parents were Charles Oxley and Margaret King:

OXLEY, AVERILDA       KING
GRO Reference: 1892  S Quarter in DONCASTER  Volume 09C  Page 813

She can be found with them on the 1901 and 1911 census in Mexborough.

I recommend you search for her father Charles Oxley (born c.1871 in Mexborough) rather than for Averilda, as the transcriptions of her name vary wildly.

@QueenoftheWest, this is fantastic, thank you. The weird transcription explains why I couldn't find them on Find My Past. Her name does seem to be a problem for some, it's making finding her an issue, but I will indeed, now that I have a name for her father, try looking for him. Thank you so much for your help. :)
