Looking for information on Richard Canavan and Mary Ann Galway
« on: Friday 30 June 23 08:51 BST (UK) »
I've recently started tracing my ancestry and have found that two of my ancestors were Richard Canavan and his wife Mary Ann Canavan (maiden name Galway).

I've found that they had a son called Alexander Canavan who was born on the 31st May 1867. His district of birth is recorded as Lurgan. I know that the family later moved to Glasgow, but I am trying to find out more information about where Richard and Mary Ann were born, to go further back with tracing my ancestry.

Any information about them, or how I could take this further would be appreciated.

I suspect that Richard and Mary Ann got married in Scotland, for the 'scotlandspeople' website marriage index shows a marriage registered in Glasgow Central District in 1866 between a 'Richard Kanafin' and a 'Mary Ann Galloway'.  The record is pay to view, but it's pretty well a must-see for you, as the information in it should give you a surer footing for tracing your ancestry a generation further back.

Yes that is interesting and with subsequent births of the children in Ireland it may be that they were in Scotland first rather than moving there later...well they may have moved later after the births of the children?

I wonder if Mary Ann Galloway was from Scotland rather than Ireland.

If you have the death certificates could you let us have the ages at death of both Richard and Mary Ann and the place/s they died please.
See below for details of deaths

Here is the FS link to the marriage Kanafin/Galloway 21/7/1866 in Glasgow that Gaffy has found.  If you can get the certificate from SP you will be a bit further forward as Gaffy says

Yes, I paid for a copy of this marriage certificate and it gives Richard's age as 22 and Mary Ann age as 20, so born around 1844 and 1846. It gives Richards parents as Alexander Kanafin and Sarah Kanafin (McCann). And Mary Ann's parents as William Galloway and Sarah Galloway (Killow). I'm assuming that Kanafin is a misspelling.

I can see from the birth record of Alexander Canavan, it gives his mothers surname as Galway, rather than Galloway.

Thanks to everyone else for their information. It will take me a while to go through everything.
