Place in Berkshire
« on: Friday 30 June 23 10:23 BST (UK) »
In 1851 Moses Hawkins age 89 was living in Dauntsey Wiltshire with his family. He states he was born  in Berkshire, but I can't read the town / village name. Looks like Bucket to me!
Please can anyone help decipher it. 1841 just says he wasn't born in county (Wilts) of course and he died before the 1861 census.

FindMyPast say "Cockels" (Wiltshire FHS) and Ancestry say "Cockett".  But neither appear on the GENUKI entry for Berkshire.  :-\
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

A Moses Hawkins was baptised in Little Coxwell, Berks, in 1764. Might this name on the census be a mishearing of Coxwell?

Thank you both. I had seen the Cockels transcript on FindMyPast but didn't want to jump to conclusions. I had wondered about the Moses bapt in Lt Coxwell, but I'm glad you came up with the same suggestion, Davedrave.
The Moses Hawkins who was baptised in Lt Coxwell in 1764 doesn't appear to have married or died there or Faringdon, so Moses of Dauntsey does look very much like my 2nd cousin 5 times removed..

After a bit more research, I'm now convinced that the place name was intended to be Coxwell.
I found a marriage for Moses' daughter (by his first wife) Alice Hawkins to John Hawkins in 1817. On the 1851 and 1861 censuses Alice of Dauntsey and husband John of Little Coxwell are in Little Coxwell. John turns out to be Alice's first cousin - the son of Moses' brother Aaron.

It’s nice when you find confirmation like that.
