Thomas Quinlan Bn 1886 Carlow
« on: Friday 30 June 23 14:52 BST (UK) »
Thomas Quinlan believed born in 1886 Tullow, Carlow Married Elizabeth Toole(Lizzie) in 1918 nee Hudson. They married in 1918 in Carlow. Thomas became stepdad to 4 children and they then went onto have 4 more. Unfortunately I dont know if Thomas date of birth correct. I have searched Irish records but the ones born on that year died before the marriage in 1918. The marriage record does not give his age, his father is shown as John Quinlan. J have search for Thomas's with fathers name John back as far as 1876 but all seem to be a dead end. I have checked cnsus records 1901/1911 to no avail.

So I am now brickwalled. Any advis would be appreciated.  Michael

Welcome to RootsChat!

Have you ruled out this Thomas?:

He was born 13th June 1888 on Dublin Road, Carlow to John Quinlan, a shoemaker, and his wife, Catherine Quinlan (formerly Young).

I cannot see a death for him.

I believe the father, John Quinlan died in 1890, aged 40:

John and Catherine married in Altrincham, Cheshire, England in 1878 and had at least:
- Mary Ellen (1880) in Altrincham, Cheshire
- Mary Julia (1883) in Carlow
- James (1886) '' ''
- Thomas (1888) '' ''
- Elizabeth (1890) '' ''

There is an orphaned Thomas Quinlan of around the right age living in Carlow in 1901:

Thomas' brother James is living with their sister Ellen (now Ellen Nolan):

On Ellen's marriage certificate to her husband, John, her residence is Tullow.

Cannot conclusively prove this is the right man, but I can't find anything to disprove it either.

Thanks for that. Thomas's dad John was shown on marriage record in 1918 I would think that might not be him. The one in the 1901 census I dicounted as he is listed as an orphan.

Thanks for your time I will print your info and have another look

Marriage certificates did not always explicitly state that the father was deceased; my great-grandmother's father died 26 years before she married, but there is no mention of that on her marriage certificate.
