Vivash Edney in East Dean Romsey
« on: Friday 30 June 23 22:50 BST (UK) »
When George Vivash marries Mary Gruncell/Grunsell in Lockerley in 1874 he is of full age and gives his father as Alfred Edney.  Marriage witnesses Langridge and Gruncell.
In 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911 he is 29, 38, 48 and 56 from East Dean.  Dies in 1919 age claimed 65.

In 1871 he possibly shows as a boarder from East Dean age 20.

Can anyone see evidence for him in 1861, or a possible birth?  Or evidence of Alfred Edney?

Thanks

PS There is an Edwin George Vivash born 1851, but he died in Romsey in 1864 age 13

Added: There is an Alfred George Vivash, with mother Emma, baptised in 1850 in East Dean, who could be him if age a little out.

Any occupation given for Alfred Edney?  There are 3 1851 entries in Hampshire for that name - all old enough to be a father in 1853/54 & all were single

Hi, CaroleW,

They are labourers.

I have found a death for an Alfred Edney in Stockbridge/Lockerley in 1859 age 39, but he has probate and is a Gentleman.

Yepp, found that.

Looking for a bastardy report, but unlikely to find one?

George marries in Lockerley.  The family would (probably) be known to the vicar, so would he let pass an invented father, or would it be a locally known 'fact'?  Invented fathers normally have the same surname.

Bedtime.

Depends how long the vicar had been in Lockerley.  If he was inventing a father for "respectability" purposes he would have used the surname Vivash.

By giving his fathers name as Edney he is acknowledging/admitting he was illegit.  If he didn't know who his father was that column would be blank so on the face if it I would say his father was Alfred Edney.
