John Conway (b. 1849) in Manchester on 1851 Census?
« on: Saturday 01 July 23 10:51 BST (UK) »
Hi, I have a family recorded as living at the (now defunct) address of 11 Vine Street, Sunderland, Co Durham. The second-eldest child listed, John Conway b. 1849, is an ancestor. The parents were born in Ireland, but the children mainly in Lancashire. They are as follows:

John Conway, 56, Ireland
Catherine Conway, 40, Ireland
Catherine Conway, 17, Preston, Lancs
John Conway, 11, Manchester, Lancs
Mary A Conway, 9, Manchester, Lancs
Jane Conway, 5, Sunderland, Durham

On the GRO, I have been able to find Catherine's birth in Preston in 1843, and John and Mary A's birth in Manchester in 1849 and 1852 respectively (mmn. Kelly). However, I cannot locate a family, presumably in Manchester at the time, on the 1851 Census.

Any help here would be most welcome  :)

Can't say I knew that. The census records being water damaged would definitely explain why I'm not finding this family in 1851  :-\

Thanks for the information.

I can't find John or Catherine on 1881, but I have no record of either of them dying

Where are they living in 1871?

Have you found all the children in 1881 to see if either is living with them.

In 1871, the couple are at 5 Spring Garden Lane, Trinity Parish, Sunderland. By that point, only Catherine, 15, is still living with the parents.

Son John (b. 1849, Manchester) married a Mary McDonald in 1868, and the couple appear consistently on the censuses from 1871 to at least 1891.

Daughter Catherine (b. 1843, Preston) married a Smith Brown of Newcastle in 1861, and she's on the census in 1881 at Bishopwearmouth as Catheran (sic) Brown, wife of Smith Brown.
