William Taverner
« on: Saturday 01 July 23 11:36 BST (UK) »
Hi,

On his 1707 marriage record at Dunsford, Devon. William Taverner has an alias of Avery.

Does anyone happen to know of his connection with the Avery family, please?

Thanks,

Gordon

I can't help with your query - however, did you notice that there was a baptism at the same church on 1 December 1706 for Mary the daughter of John Taverner alias Avery?  As the handwriting is so clear it might be an idea to go back and see if there is anything else?

ADDED:  at least 2 more instances of the alias  :-\

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thanks for pointing out these similar cases for John Taverner (alias Avery).

Very curiously:

Thomasin Taverner married Henry Steer at Chagford on 22 Jul 1750.

Having searched for her baptism, without success, I found:

Thomasin Avery baptised at Ashburton  on 19 Jan 1728 and her father was William.

Someone still called TAVERNER alias AVERY in 1809:

"Thomas Taverner alias Avery" occupying a place called Voghay, near Exeter.

Thanks for these references.

The following link explains something of the origin of "Taverner alias Avery":
