Mary CORNWELL born c.1820 in Bottisham Lode
« on: Sunday 02 July 23 11:45 BST (UK) »
My Great great-aunt who dropped off the radar sometime after 1843. Before I finally draw a proverbial line on her subsequent history, does any CORNWELL researcher have any knowledge of her? A loose end for someone so relatively (sorry) close to me is irksome.

Third daughter of Holmes CORNWELL (1794-1880) & Mary (COOK) (1793-1881) she was baptised at Bottisham (HT) on 13 Oct 1822. Mother of an illegitimate daughter Marianne Elizabeth CORNWELL (1843-1917) Mary left home sometime prior to 1851 leaving her child to be raised by her parents on Bottisham Fen. I can find no trace of Mary thereafter although there is a remote possibility that she may have been witness at her daughter's wedding to Lot WESTON (1843-1920) at St James' Church, West Hackney, on 15 July 1865.

Any help or guidance will be much appreciated. Thank you.

NB Several public trees suggest that Mary married John BARROWS Q4 1846 in Newmarket district but that is not so.

The witness could have been her grandmother

CaroleW,

Good point that makes much sense. Thank you for your response.

Hi Peter, I have made a note as follows:
1854 SEP 19
Frederic Evans 34
Mary Cornwell 34 (of Fitzroy Street)
As a possible marriage but I haven't followed it up.
This is from the Cambridge union Marriage Notice books
Is this a marriage you've looked into?

Nothing on freebmd or the GRO index in 1854 or 1855 for that marriage.  Wonder if it was cancelled for some reason?

Yes, I've searched both and camdex and nothing comes up, can't find them in the census either afterwards.

Karen,

Certainly the right name/age but no matches in my CORNWELL database for such a marriage I'm afraid. Nor can I identify any Mary CORNWELL with connections to Fitzroy Street around Sep 1854. It's something of a mystery but as Carole W says possibly a case of cold feet? Many thanks for the suggestion.

Just a guess disappearance could suggest migration.

Redroger,

Of course, and there are several promising candidates documented but all lacking sufficient information to allow us a positive identification unfortunately.
