Hey everyone, I'm new, thanks in advance for any help. Deciphering writing in a bunch of old family books.

In this one, I have the first initials, and of course the number, but I don't know what to make of the letters in the middle--it looks like "R Nc." or something of the sort but it doesn't make much sense.

What is the writing in the other books?  Is the penmanship similar?
Ellison: Co. Wicklow/Canada       Fowley: Sligo/Canada       Furnival: Lancashire/Canada       Ibbotson: Sheffield/Canada       Lee/DeJongh: Lancashire & Cheshire       Mumford: Essex/Canada       Ovens: Ireland/Canada       Sarge: Yorkshire/Canada             Stuart: Sligo/Canada       Sullivan: Co. Clare/Canada      Vaus: Sussex/Surrey      Wakefield: Tuam or Ballinasloe, Ireland              (Surname: Originated/Place Last Lived)  (Canadians lived in Ontario)

…The book is called The Philosophy of Mystery, by Walter Dendy, and is from 1845…

Wow, small world; the Dendy name pops up again (in a thread in which I’ve contributed, not as a result of an internet search).

A friend of mine is a descendant of Walter Cooper Dendy’s sibling.

What a coincidence. Doesn't seem to be much known today, but apparently he was quite a character. The books is weird and wide-ranging in a way that only Victorian books by amateur paranormal explorers tend to be  ;D

No this seems unique among the other writing.

Anything to do with Rand McNally , publishers?

Interesting idea but the publisher is Harper & Brothers....

Sort of a fun book if anyone is curious https://archive.org/details/philosophyofmyst03dend/page/n7/mode/2up

Could be..though there are fewer than 500pp here, so it wouldn't be referencing this book....

Hi, just out of left field, the first letters are not H & B, Harper and Brothers, and perhaps a catalogue number? A proof copy or something?

I read it as:
H.P.B. Rd No 554
Thought maybe Registered Number in some form of cataloguing system?
