Help with attestation record
« on: Wednesday 05 July 23 23:55 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone help me understand this? Does it mean he was in service until 1937? If so what does the 1924 line relate to?

Thanks!

The last line reads:

28-2-37 para 383 (XXVI)(a) KR

28-2-37 is the date, February 28th, 1937.

Para 383 is, “King's Regulations 1935 Para 383 is the section dealing with discharges. The reason for discharge is given by the sub-para reference.”

XXVI (a) is, “Conscripting or enlisting children under the age of fifteen years into the national armed forces or using them to participate actively in hostilities”.

So basically, it means that on February 28th, 1937 - Discharged due to Conscripting or enlisting children under the age of fifteen years.

*Nothing to do with service

Thank you

The two lines are for the same man.

Born 1892 and this is for 1919 so not sure how that could apply?

He is George Boxall 1045754 if anyone can check as I can’t share the full image.

Thanks again

The Artillery Attestations ledger from which your image is taken has quite a few discharge entries from the 1930s, so I would interpret this as meaning that he served on after the end of WW1, and was discharged in 1937 when he would have been about 45 years old.

Having now seen the complete entry, I think some of the words above the reason for his discharge include RGA (Royal Garrison Artillery) and Farr Sgt  since he was a farrier and the next line includes 4 ??? Bde RA, so possibly his unit. Given that the handwriting is different for the two entires, I don't think they are necessarily linked.

Also I'm afraid Historical Genealogy quoted the wrong reason for his discharge. See the entry below. As the Army was being mechanised in the late 11930s it stands to reason that they would need fewer farriers, in the artillery.
