Early 18th century - Sir Richard Guy, Honourable Artillery Company.
« on: Thursday 06 July 23 19:20 BST (UK) »
I'd appreciate help in understanding the following information:

Guy, Richard, Sir (ff. 1708/09) Mily: no formal adm. date. Elected Lieutenant-General of the Company at AGC 1708/09; served as Lieutenant-General for the Baumes March 20 September 1709; elected Lieutenant of the Ground at AGC 1710. . Sher1708. Probably the Sir Richard Guy who was Master of the Vintners’ Co. 1708. Sources: CM; Vintners. Pus.isHEeD Rers: Noorthouck.
(Source: 1708: British Army, Honourable Artillery Company, Cardew-Rendle Roll Of Members 1537-1908)

In particular:
What is meant by 'Lieutenant-General for the Baumes'?
What was his role as 'Lieutenant of the Ground at AGC'?
What does AGC stand for?
Would he have seen active service?

With many thanks for your help.

AGC is the Annual General Court of the HAC. Like an AGM.

Guy, Richard, Sir (ff. 1708/09) Mily: no formal adm. date. Elected Lieutenant-General of the Company at AGC 1708/09;
Would he have seen active service?
No he wouldn't.
At that time the role of the HAC was similar to the trained bands of London, in that they were militia intended for service in the UK only. In fact the HAC was a glorified gentlemen's club and pressure group representing the interests of the City of London. The emphasis was on ceremonial and protecting their special privileges. It wasn't until the start of the twentieth century that they saw active service in the 2nd Boer War. They distinguished themselves in both World Wars and more latterly had a role providing forward observation parties and stay behind parties in the event of a Soviet invasion of Western Europe. However they still have a high profile role in the City of London, and anyone who wants to get on in the political world within the City tends to seek membership. As Shaun's earlier reply indicated, they used to be keen on a form of democracy in which the junior officers and sergeants elected their officers.

Here's a link to the start of the very detailed account of their history which Shaun also linked to above: https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=_9xqMj_R3a4C&pg=PA01
Just reading a few pages will give you the sense of where their priorities lay.

When I worked in the City in the 1980s my 22nd floor office overlooked the HAC Ground and I was occasionally distracted by VIP helicopters taking off and landing.

Thank you for your replies; they've been much appreciated. Since posting my query, I have found a number of other men, all Master Vintners by trade, with familial links to Richard Guy, who were also members of the HAC. Interesting!
Thank you!
