Address confusion
« on: Friday 07 July 23 15:35 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have just recieved the birth certificate for my uncle who was born on the 31st of January 1931 and the address is down as 15 Osman Street in Belfast.

I have checked the 1932 street directory via Lennon Wylies website and it states a Wm Tierney was living here at that time and on the 1924 street directory he was also living there also which stands to reason that he would have been there in 1931.

My great grandfathers name was John Joseph Wilson and by this point he was married with 2 sons.

Is it possible he was living there with the Tierney family or is there another possibility?

Maybe it is as simple as the expectant mother was visiting the address when she went into labour  :)

It states that my uncle was born there and that it was also listed as the dwelling of the father.

I think he may have been living with them, for on 27 August 1930 a 'John Jos Wilson' was in St. Peter's RC Church, Belfast, to witness the marriage of James Tierney (of 15 Osman Street) and Emily McMurdie, John Jos Wilson's address was also given as 15 Osman Street.

Is it possible that the street directory only listed the owner and not lodgers,  what is shown against other properties in the street.

The 1911 Ireland census shows a Canavan family of 8 living at 15 Osman Street, the census house and building return shows 5 rooms in use, so a house with a reasonably sized interior (relative to others in Belfast for that era) and definitely potential for lodgers.
