Help deciphering 1871 Census for Margaret McDonald b.c1826 Scotland
« on: Saturday 08 July 23 13:13 BST (UK) »
I am hoping to trace a family of McDonald, several members of whom were living in Stoney Middleton, in Derbyshire in 1861. They are Margaret McDonald (b. Scotland, c1826), who married James Garlic of Stoney Middleton at Rotherham (Yorkshire) in 1856, her mother Catherine (b. Scotland c1798), and her sister Catherine (b. Liverpool c.1841).  The only Census to give Margaret's place of birth, other than just "Scotland" is 1871, when she and her husband were living in Chesterfield. Both Ancestry and FindMyPast have interpreted this as "Loch Finn" (or Loch Fyne) but I am not convinced. Can anyone suggest an alternative interpretation, please, for the entry attached?  I should add that I have been unable to find any of the above-mentioned McDonalds in 1841 or 1851. The marriage entries for Margaret (1856), and her sister Catherine (1866), both say their father was called Peter McDonald, and that he was a soldier.

Thank you in advance,
Rosemary

Hi Rosemary

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

There is a birth or christening entry on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk as a possibility:

MARGARET MCDONALD
Parents PETER MCDONALD/CATHARINE RIDDOCH
11/06/1826
Ref 329 40 / 28
Auchterarder - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auchterarder

Added: I think this is not connected. You mention that Margaret's mother Catherine was born c. 1798. The parents above were having children in Auchterarder from early 1800s so they cannot be your Margaret's parents  :-\

Monica,

Thank you very much indeed for your thoughtful reply. Yes, indeed the baptism in Auchterarder appears to be the only one which matches age-wise. But mother Catherine's age would rule it out, if there were earlier baptisms to that family, especially as her last child, also called Catherine was born c.1841/2 (aged 19 in 1861).  She was born in Liverpool, but unfortunately, her birth doesn't appear in Civil Registration records, otherwise I might have a handle on the mother's maiden surname. As father Peter was a soldier, I've wondered if he was posted to Ireland, and that is why I cannot find them on Censuses earlier than 1861. Most vexing! :-)

Looking again at the census entry, I wonder if Ancestry and FindMyPast's interpretation of Margaret's birthplace as "Loch Fyne" is correct, reading it as "Lock Fain"? Which, to the best of my understanding  would place the family in Argyllshire, and the parish of Glassary. There was a Peter and Catherine McDonald having family there between 1828 and 1834 (John, William, Charles and Mary Ann), but no Margaret!

Again many thanks for your reply, and your interest.
Rosemary

Hi,

The place of birth, looks like "Lock of erin" to me?

Lock Earn?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loch_Earn

There is also  this baptism:
At St Peters Liverpool (Roman Catholic)
Catherine, born 6 Nov, Baptised 1 Dec 1841
Patrick & Catherine McDonald
Godmother: Anne Finnegan

Can't find a civil registration  - which leads me to wonder if it was an Army registers birth?

Cheers
