MC DONALD   William   Nephew   -   6   Scholar   Lancashire   Manchester

Rosemary, from the 1861 census entry, have you got anywhere in trying to trace who this nephew, William McDonald, could be the son of? Too old to be an illegitimate son to Margaret's sister, Catherine. Julia could well be Catherine's daughter though.

Two possible births showing on the GRO around the right time in Manchester for William:

MCDONALD, WILLIAM        -  No additional maiden name showing for mother
GRO Reference: 1854  J Quarter in MANCHESTER  Volume 08D  Page 259

MCDONALD, WILLIAM        GLYNN
GRO Reference: 1854  D Quarter in MANCHESTER  Volume 08D  Page 105 - From www.lan-opc.org.uk I think this William may have been the son of a Michael McDonald and Catherine Glynn.

The place of birth, looks like "Lock of erin" to me?

There is also  this baptism:
At St Peters Liverpool (Roman Catholic)
Catherine, born 6 Nov, Baptised 1 Dec 1841
...
Can't find a civil registration  - which leads me to wonder if it was an Army registers birth?

Ambly,

Thank you very much for your thoughtful reply. It's so good to have another pair of eyes for a fresh perspective! I will bear Loch Earn in mind, in my search. Although both daughters Margaret and Catherine married within the Church of England, I have wondered already if the family had been  Roman Catholic, so yes, the baptism to Patrick and Catherine is possible. I have been looking for appropriate Military records, but as you can imagine with a name like M[a]cdonald, it's difficult to tell how appropriate they may be.

John,

Thank you for this, and your earlier suggestion re the 1851 Census entry. I have to admit that seeing Margaret in Derbyshire before her marriage in 1856 at Rotherham (Yorkshire) has a certain attraction. However as you can imagine, with such a common surname as M[a]cdonald, nothing seems certain, apart from in 1861. Catherine, the mother died shortly after the Census, and was buried at Stoney Middleton on 25 Feb 1862.

Thanks again,
Rosemary

I wonder about this possible Margaret in 1851.

Many thanks for this suggestion. I'll certainly bear it in mind, considering the family's connection with Liverpool. :-)
