Thomas Jones
« on: Saturday 08 July 23 15:34 BST (UK) »
It seems like records older than 1837 are difficult to find! I am looking for birth records for Thomas Jones (born around 1810) He spent his entire life in Tudweiliog. He died there in 1886. His mothers name was Jane, but do not know her last name. His wife was Anne, but I have no information about her. His son, Evan Thomas was my great great grandfather. I have Thomas' marriage certificate and death entry. Any help would be great!

His wife was Anne, but I have no information about her.

You should have her surname, age and hopefully fathers name from the marriage certificate as a starting point.

Yes I agree records before 1837 are more difficult, especially with common names like Thomas Jones!

Hi,

With a name like Jones, you are going to have to provide more information, such as:

- Could you provide links to Thomas' appearances on the various censuses? Familysearch.org is free, so it is best to link to the transcripts on there.
- How can you have Thomas' marriage certificate, but not know his wife's maiden name? What did the record say and was it post-1837, i.e. did it provide his father's name?

EDIT:

Is this your ancestor Evan's baptism?:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FMMJ-92Q

Mother's maiden name is Thomas.

Matching marriage in 1832, but pre-civil registration so no father's names. Witnesses were Richard Thomas and John Jones.

And on the 1841 census?:

Oops. Sorry. I do have Ann's surname. It is Ann Thomas (according to marriage certificate). The marriage was in 1832. I have him in all the census from 1841 to 1881.

I have Thomas' marriage certificate

There weren't marriage certificates such as we know them back in 1832 - what kind of marriage certificate have you got?

Marriage register entry has witnesses as Richard Thomas and John Jones.  Marriage was 6th July 1832.  Both bride and groom signed x

ADDED John Jones was witness to other marriages

I haven't actually looked, but this is where Tudweiliog appears on Ancestry. Some records start in 1772 but quite often some are missing or very hard to read. https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/62100/images/004394012_00004?pId=150426580
