White Ribbon On Man's Suit?
« on: Saturday 08 July 23 20:22 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know what might be the white thing on the front of this young man's suit?
Does it signify anything in particular?
A fraternal organization?

Purchased from a donation/thrift store in Maryland
16x20 crayon portrait in a stacked wooden frame
(c. 1895-1905 ish?)

Personally I think it is a handkerchief, instead of being in jacket pocket, it was on jacket neck.

It looks as if it's been inserted through the button hole on the lapel. I'm not sure what it would be.

It might be worth doing  a Google search to see if there are any other similar images.

Great find, janan. If you scroll down, that same photo recurs with another caption: "A note on the rear of this image reads: ‘The best wishes from Class of ’08, Texas College, to Mrs Minnie Apperson’". So probably some sort of academic or sporting ribbon from the college.

It doesn't say anything about the significance of the ribbon but there are more examples here

Thanks Janan
Those smaller ribbons were used for 8th-grade graduations in my area until the 80s
Perhaps they were bigger in earlier years
