John Byers & Jane Raine
« on: Sunday 09 July 23 01:34 BST (UK) »
Looking to go back a Generation.
John Byers & Jane Raine are my 4x great grandparents so am looking for my 5x great grandparents.
Jane Raine was born in 1766. I believe in the Durham area probably in Darlington. She was buried on 25 April 1847 at St Cuthbert's Darlington as Jane Byers. Jane married John Byers on the 21 Jan 1793 at St Cuthbert's Darlington by banns both of this parish. They had 4 Children, Ann 1796, Mary (Marie) 1799, John 1801, and my 3x great-grandmother Sarah 1803 all in Darlington and bapt in St Cuthbert's.

I do not have them on the 1841 census.

John's birth date is unknown to me but as he was of the parish would say he was born in Darlington.

Any push in the right direction would be helpful.

Freereg also has a son Henry bap 30 March 1794 to John Byers - skinner at St Cuthbert's

ADDED

Possibly the name of John's father.

Do you have Jane Byers death certificate? who reported her death, it might help find her 1841 perhaps given the wrong surname.

Can not get any certificates at the moment as I had to cancel my debit card due to an attack on my account. (someone used my card but I picked up the transaction straight away).
But I can look on FindMyPast and see if I can see the Death Notice.
Thank you amondg for your help.

The full transcript of Mary Byers' baptism from DRO is very informative:

Darlington, St. Cuthbert
3 Feb 1799 Mary Byers, born 2 Feb, 2nd daughter of John Byers (skinner, native of Carlisle, Cumberland) by his wife Jane Raine (native of Hedley in the Parish of Ovingham, Northumberland)

One of the witnesses at the Byers-Raine marriage was Sarah Raine.

Added: I just noticed that OP says Jane Raine born 1766, so this is probably irrelevant, but I’ll leave it just in case.

There are two candidate baptisms for this Jane Raine at Ryton Holy Cross:

Ryton, County Durham, Holy Cross
16 May 1773 Jane Raine, of Leadgate, daughter of Letalies Raine
[This Leadgate is 2 miles east of Hedley-on-the-Hill.]

FindMyPast has an image and a transcript that gives the father as Letitius.

Also (but less likely?)
Ryton, County Durham, Holy Cross
3 Sep 1775 Jane Rayne, of Winlaton, daughter of William Rayne

DRO has Raine baptisms at Ryton Holy Cross going back to 1616, the majority linked to Winlaton. The baptism of Jane Raine is the only one to mention Leadgate as an abode. There are none that mention Hedley as an abode.

Here is the correct? Jane Raine:

Ovingham, Northumberland , St Mary the Virgin
16 Jul 1767 Jane Rain, of Hedley, daughter of Ralph & Mary Rain

This is the earliest Raine record of any kind at Ovingham, at DRO, but their baptism records only start in 1750.
