Help with Tipperary place name in 1771 deed please.
« on: Sunday 09 July 23 08:53 BST (UK) »
Would appreciate knowing the location of the place name which appears to be Rathlevane.
Tipperary in a lease deed in 1771.

Regards,
Jen.

I agree it looks like Rathlevane - but although there are several similar place names on the Irish Townland website - I can't see one spelt exactly the same unfortunately.

No doubt you have looked, but just in case;

https://thecore.com/seanruad/

I input 'rath' as the start of the name in the townland search box. You may want to try other parts of the name, as the options are flexible.

Good Luck with it. Sorry not to have come up with anything for you.

Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Hi Pennines,  Thankyou for your interest and help, I was not aware of the website, great to have
                    for future reference.  The document was signed at Thurles and the family remained
                    in that area for 150 years.  Using the website I have located a place called Caplevane
                    which is a similar sounding name and close enough to Thurles to be considered.
                     I will note it as a possible location.

Craggagh,     Thanks also for your suggestion  :D

Using the website I have located a place called Caplevane which is a similar sounding name and close enough to Thurles to be considered.

Caplevane in Co Offaly and about 65 km from Thurles.

Hi Jen -- I am so pleased that you are now aware of that Townland website, if you didn't know about it before. It can be really useful.

Irish research is often so frustrating, as I know, (I am allowed to say that, as my paternal grandmother was Irish!! By coincidence she also came from Tipperary.)
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Too difficult and too late to try and read now but here is Rathlevane again.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSNX-ZGZS?i=283&cat=185720
About half way down left hand page
And the memorial (the first one in the index)
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSH3-97YC-N?i=369&cat=185720
Starts on the left and continues on the right.
Hopefully there is a clue in that mess as to where it is.

Kiltaglassan,  Thankyou for the maps, very helpful  :D :)

Pennines,  Thanks for your guidance, couldn't agree more on Irish research, the place names
                are very challenging  ;D

Sinann, I greatly appreciate your help, your link to the family search site is a gem, I've been
            visiting the library to read the deeds, I was unaware they were on FS.  ??? ;D

IF I’m reading this correctly Rathlevane is 93 acres and 1 rood and is in the Barony of Middlethird.
