Finding Elizabeth New after 1911 Census in Newbury
« on: Monday 10 July 23 05:44 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I wonder if someone could assist me please, my Great Aunt Elizabeth New was born 1870 at Newbury, she lived with family members, including her brother-in-law after her sister Mary Jane New died to assist with the care of their children.  By 1911 Census, aged 41 years, I found her living with her Mother Ellen New at Kings Almshouses at Newbury.   After that, really cannot identify if she married then, no further findings for her.   There was one marriage to a gentleman by Newport, but that doesn't seem to connect.   She was getting too old to have any children, most likely.

Any ideas would be most grateful, we have found an Elizabeth New who married Ernest J. Brown in Reading Berkshire, but the birth dates do not connect.

I am hoping someone can help me please.

The Elizabeth who married Albert Newport was Elizabeth Annie New, a spinster aged 38. Even though transcription says spinster she names her father as Henry Thomas Bailey occ Coachman.
A Harriett Maria Bailey was one of the witnesses

Thanks Lizzie,
Elizabeth's parents were John & Ellen New, so that discounts that theory on the Newport fellow.

Just to finish off the Bailey / New angle. Elizabeth Ann Bailey married Edward New in Newbury in 1913. Haven't found his death yet, but looks as if she might have been a widow not a spinster when she married Albert Newport. So definitely not yours.

Have you found all her brothers and sisters in 1921 was she with one of them and mis identified?

I also checked newspapers
Newbury Weekly News and General Advertiser 26 April 1906.
Deaths
- April 21st at 9 Raymond's Almshouses Newbury John New 75
--------------------
Same Newspaper dated 13 December 1906
St Mary's Charity. At a meeting of the Trustees yesterday Ellen New 75 was elected to a vacant almshouse of the Charity.
-------------------
It would seem as a married couple they lived at Raymond's Almshouses and after John's death
Ellen moved to St Mary's that was perhaps for widows?.

ADDED
Elizabeth would not have been able to stay after the death of her mother, hopefully family took her in.

Sadly 1921 Census not available on Ancestry, yes all that information is correct, thanks for all that detail.   1911 Census definitely shows Elizabeth living with her Mother Ellen New

The 1919 electoral I've found has Walter P Hancock and Rose living at 4 Junction Terrace Rose lane. As the register for that Ward is in alphabetical order, the Harris family is next - Albert Edward Harris and Elizabeth Harris, they live at 6 Collingbourne cottages.
