Dating photo New Zealand - Hawkes, Black, Russell

Hi Rootschaters,

Could anyone please date this photo. It may be of my Hawkes family - Richard Neville Nettles Hawkes senior (died 1900), his wife Jean Hawkes, nee Black (died 1919) and nine of their children. It was possibly taken in Dunedin or South Canterbury, New Zealand between 1890 and 1918. There were family deaths in 1900, 1904, 1907 and 1917 which may be the reason for the black armband (on the man who may be my great-grandfather).

Just to see what it looks like as you already have a date :-)

I would tweak the dates to 1905-10.
The brimless hats are a bit of a giveaway.
In addition the chap at the back has a style of collar also
a short lived creation from this time.

I see that the man third from left at the back, is wearing a black armband.  Family death perhaps?

Yes, most likely. Still trying to work out which family is in the photo.
