Anyone familiar with a place named Bradley, near Colne please?
« on: Monday 10 July 23 14:25 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone,

I wonder if anyone knows of a place named Bradley, which must be near to Colne in Lancashire, please?

I am from Lancashire, but have never heard of it - it is the abode shown on a baptism at St. Bartholomew's Church in Colne - both in the original filmed registers and on Lancs OPC.

It may of course, be a localised area, but I've still never come across it before. The abode of later children of these parents, was Barrowford - all baptised at St. Bartholomews.

Many thanks for reading.

From Lancs OPC (but filmed record is clearly the same)

Baptism: 14 Sep 1794 St Bartholomew, Colne, Lancashire, England
Thomas Wilkinson - Son of Joseph Wilkinson & Bella
    Born: 18 Jul 1794
    Abode: Bradley
    Occupation: Mason
    Register: Baptisms 1790 - 1812, Page 56, Entry 183
    Source: LDS Film 1471024

Thank you both SO much.

I can't believe I've never heard of Bradley, having seen it now in large print on that map!

The 1843 tithe map clearly shows Bradley as a separate settlement centred on the modern Bradley Road and Bradley Road East in Nelson, with a large flour mill. Bradley was quite close to the Leeds and Liverpool canal (to the west), and there is a wharf marked just to the north east of the modern Pendle Street crossing of the canal, where Forest Street MOT centre is now.

On the 1843 map Nelson doesn't yet exist: following Walvenden Water south from Bradley across one large field we come to Hebson, a larger and more spread-out settlement centred on the modern Pendle Rise shopping centre in Nelson.

Apologies, but I can't post images of this since the maps are at a subscription-only site.

Gosh Alan -- that is so very informative, thank you. Wasn't Nelson actually called Marsden orginally? Then was re-named after a pub - the Lord Nelson? Or am I wrong about that?

I don't live in Nelson - but I'm from Lancashire - and actually, the Leeds - Liverpool canal runs behind the houses across the road from me! I am still 'gob-smacked' that I had never heard of Bradley.

Thank you so much for the additional information.

Marsden is also on the tithe map, further south (four or five fields) and around St Pauls Church – looking at a modern map I think that area is now Little Marsden. The account on Wikipedia about the naming of Nelson agrees with what you say.

This is really odd - Nelson is NOT included in the Lancashire parishes listed on Genuki. Nor is Marsden.

Barrowford - a nearby, smaller place IS listed AND it shows a wonderful map of the whole area, including Bradley and lots of other smaller townships. I had heard of all the others! No idea why Nelson isn't on that site - but never mind, I have learnt much today thanks to everyone's lovely help.

Just found it on Genuki - listed as 'Great and Little Marsden' - hence listed under the letter 'G'!
