James Dady born 1836
« on: Tuesday 11 July 23 01:57 BST (UK) »
I have a James Dady married to a Mary Ann Smeed 30 Nov 1852, Dover, Kent.
They seem to have four children William, James, Mary Elizabeth and Edward.
The 1861 census states their daughter Mary Elizabeth was born in Malta abt 1856.
Are there any records I can search for to say they went to Malta for a couple of years?

Hello Suzy, I can't help with any particular records, however it is possible James was in the army. Troops involved in the Crimean War passed through Malta, and I have seen reports of families accompanying them and remaining in Malta while the troops moved on to the war. (There are many children on the 1861 census born Malta.  :D )

James Occupation is a Cordwainer (shoe maker) 1871, 1881.
Unless a error in the 1871 census as birth place Malta.
Just another puzzle to work out ;D

As they do not appear on the 1861 Census they may have been in Malta.

The East Kent Militia were back in England about 18th June (Spithead) aboard the Etna.

Canterbury Journal..., 5 July 1856
EAST KENT MILITIA
On Monday afternoon the Lord Lieutenant of the County, Viscount Sydney, visited Canterbury for the purpose of inspecting this regiment, after their return from foreign service and preparatory (it is supposed) to their disbandionment.

Note - supposed wrongly!

The East Kent Militia arrived Malta on the Great Britain on 24 April 1855. They had been at Woolwich since September 1854, leaving there for Portsmouth on 5 April 1855 and then to Malta. Glowing reports of their conduct in numerous newspaper articles of the day.

The regiment then volunteered for overseas garrison service in 1855 and was sent to Malta, arriving by May and remaining for a year until 1856 when it was awarded the Mediterranean Battle Honour. The Militia was supposed to be disembodied on return to UK but was cancelled . The East Kent Militia were among the small number of militia regiments retained during the Indian Mutiny to relieve Regular troops. They were stationed at Woolwich.
