Sarah Ann Dennis
« on: Tuesday 11 July 23 15:41 BST (UK) »
I am hoping that someone can give me anything at all on a Sarah Ann Dennis, born approx 1831 Peterborough.  I have nothing on her until 1865 when she is living in Osbaldwick, near York, married to a George Smith. They now have two daughters, Emily born 1863 and Louisa born 1865, Louisa going on to marry and was my wife's great grandmother.
The census returns from 1871 onwards  show the family moving around from York to Kippax near Leeds and on to Spofforth near Wetherby, and show George born Lincoln and Sarah born Peterborough. I cannot find any trace for either of them  in the census for 1841, 1851,1861, or any details of births, marriage, parents etc.
Can anyone out there offer any assistance please,
  Thanks.

Sadly, it looks like that child died very young.

If she was b 1831 & was 32 when first child was born - I wonder was she previously married?

I can’t see a Smith/Dennis marriage.

Children do have mmn DENNIS(S) - if this is the correct family

1865  Louisa   (York)
1867  Mary  (York)
1869  Harry  (Pontefract)
1871  Rose  (Tadcaster)
1874  Alice  (Tadcaster)
1876  Tom  (Tadcaster)

(not sure about Emily's birth registration, bap 31 July 1864 - at Osbaldwick  :-\ )

Modified to add:
Actually this is Emily's baptism at Swillington 10 Aug 1873 - 4 children baptised the same day. Emily, Louisa, Mary and Rose.

If she was born as Dennis but married & was widowed - any marriage to George Smith would be under her married name but the childrens births would show her actual maiden name of Dennis.

There is no Smith/Dennis marriage so either they never married or she married under a different surname

Hi there,
Thanks for the responses, it looks as though the Smith/Dennis conundrum continues a bit longer, I think looking for George Smith in the missing census returns could be another unprofitable chase as he may have been born in Lincoln but could have ben any where before he appears in York in the early 1860's, but thanks for looking and I shall keep digging.
