Ann Amelia Darby/Williams/De Vere born 1846 Pancras
« on: Tuesday 11 July 23 16:10 BST (UK) »
Trying to trace Ann Amelia after 1871. She married Herbert Williams in 1863 who later went under his professional stage name of Charles de Vere. Ann Amelia was an actress who later took the stage name of Millie De Vere. I have them both together in 1871 at Kelly Street St Pancras- but Charles toured abroad a lot without Millie and I would like to find out more about her. I can see that there are various references to an actress/performer Millie DeVere in the archived newaspapers but would love to know what happened to her!
Any help appreciated. Thank you,

Just been looking at an online tree for Ann Amelia.

Is it correct she was born 12 Jul 1846 Pancras, Middlesex?

There is an entry for her in the Poor Law and Board of Guardian Records, London for the Buckingham Palace Road Workhouse (Creed Register, 1910-1921).

The info on her entry gives the following details:

Ann Amelia Williams
Admission Age    68
Discharge Age    68
Record Type Admission and Discharge
Birth Date abt 1846
Admission Date 29 Jun 1914
Admission Place Westminster, London, London, England
Admission Poor Law Union    Westminster
Discharge Date    1 Dec 1914
Discharge Place Westminster, London, London, England
Discharge Poor Law Union    Westminster

On the actual register, additional details show her as married and an actress. Husband is showing as absent. She gave a last residence address of Alberta Street, Newington (can't make the full address details out).

There is also further entry for her at the Fulham Road Workhouse Register, 1914-1915.

Wonder if this could be her death with her first names the other way round?

Amelia A Williams
Death Age: 75 (born c. 1847)
1st Qrt, Chelsea London 1922, 1a/562

A search for her on the 1921 census might help to determine if this was her.

1911 census entry also finds her in a Workhouse (Strand Union Workhouse, 202 Silver Street, Upper Edmonton).

She is showing as aged 64, married and an actress. Birth place Holborn, London.

Thank you Monica- sadly this is all starting to ring true to the back story I already know and it is quite likely that her husband deserted her and set up home and family with another lady. Judging that her husband went on to have at least 7 children, it may have been that Ann Amelia was unable to conceive or that she wanted to be an actress more than a wife- who knows! I am so very grateful for the information you have found already for me- I so appreciate some clarity in a very complex story line.
Many thanks once again.

Certainly sounds complex  ::)

A family tree has attributed this son to Herbert and Ann Amelia:

WILLIAMS, CLAUD  FREDERICK   - MMN ROCHFORT
GRO Reference: 1874  J Quarter in MARYLEBONE  Volume 01A  Page 501

But as we can see, mother is showing as Rochfort not Darby. Was this who Herbert was having children with?

Noted that Herbert (and his father) both had the middle name of Shakespeare. Given his future career...seems apt!
