I wonder then if William Wilson of 1921 census became Thomas William Johnson and then reverted to the WW name?
Did you know of him as T W Johnson?

I didn't know him (a bit too young).

His daughter (Maria Johnson b.1921) was my grandmother but she sadly died in 1960 so there isn't much known about her side of the family.

There was a rumour that I've heard from a few older members of the family who remember my grandfather saying there was something about him and he'd changed his name but no-one knew the full story as to why/when (and now how many times) he changed his name.

I do yeah, it's down as Thomas William Johnson.

This is how it's been so confusing going forward.

I purchased the 1921 census that was mentioned earlier as all the names relate to people we know/have heard of within the family.

What about the 1921 occupations for William Wilson and Thomas William Johnson?
Presumably, he is the same person and as it is 1921, maybe the change of name was related to WW1 or another marriage.
Is the year of birth different in 1921 to 1939? I think it might have been.

Yeah in 1921 it shows an age of 38 which would be about 1883 but the 1939 register has 1888

 Just thinking about this:
1921 census and Maria ‘s birth was within days. Yet there are two different names  :-\
We are not getting very far here  ;)

Looking at Maria from information from later records
This looks like her in 1911 with her mother and baby Mary Emma
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XWC7-FRS

A likely birth for Mary Emma Johnson - no mother’s maiden name
Sunderland 1910 March quarter vol 10a pg 646

There is then this birth:
Violet Wilson mmn Johnson
Sunderland 1912 September quarter 10a 1458

There is a birth for Violet Johnson in the same quarter but she has a mother’s name of Rodgers.

It would be worth buying a copy of the Wilson birth just to check as it would mean that William was around then.

More complications - I hope someone can take a look
1903 - marriage Sunderland
William Wilson and Edith Annie Michael

1911 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XWCQ-BYH

Both children - Edith and Albert have mmn Michael.

Military Record
William Wilson, Wearside Brigade
Marriage details as above with children Edith, Albert and Violet Wilson born 7th August 1912.

I can’t see a birth for Violet with mmn Michael.

The record indicates trouble with William possibly desertion. 1915. ** added - yes he did desert. See the note below.

There is an interesting note though:
Man fraudulently enlisted in the Training Reserve Battln on 31st August ‘16. Regt No T.R 13/70078 Thomas William Johnson.’
