Thank you. I have done a little browsing and Elizabeth Skilling was rebuked by the Kirk Session in Ballantrae in May 1833 for pre-nuptial fornication with John Fitzpatrick. Now to browse further.....
ADDED: on 24 July [today!! and my birthday] 1842 Elizabeth appeared before the Kirk Session in Ballantrae pregnant with her 3rd child, accusing William Mitchel to be the father. She further stated that Samuel Garrat, father of her second child about three years ago [is this Mary?] 'has gone long ago' to England. On 7 Aug 1842 she appeared again, still accusing WIlliam Mitchel, who acknowledged his guilt. As this was a trilapse [new word on me] Elizabeth was ordered to attend the Presbytery of Stranraer for discipline. On 13 Nov 1842 WIlliam Mitchel appeared and was rebuked and restored to privileges. Elizabeth Skilling 'is generally believed to be a widow' state the session records.
This third child is probably John. I cannot find an appearance at the Kirk Session for Elizabeth and a first child unless that was the 1833 appearance. [William McCracken was born in 1833[. The Kirk Session Minutes on SP only go up to 1845 for Ballantrae. So there are no records for any appearances of Elizabeth regarding James Shaw Skilling b ca 1847 [who stated on his marriage that his mother was Janet Skilling, but maybe she brought him up...] and Andrew Skilling b ca 1850/1.
