That is a good find, Josey  :)

I don't think his marriage reg is going to help. He showed his parents as Samuel Skilling, farm servant, deceased and mother as Janet MS/ Skilling.

Rings a bell...just as Andrew did, messing up his parental details.

Can you see the original register on SP if you find a baptism?
Yes.

It may also be worth a look at the Kirk Session records as these often cpntain information about illegitimate births.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thank you. I have done a little browsing and Elizabeth Skilling was rebuked by the Kirk Session in Ballantrae in May 1833 for pre-nuptial fornication with John Fitzpatrick. Now to browse further.....

ADDED: on 24 July [today!! and my birthday] 1842 Elizabeth appeared before the Kirk Session in Ballantrae pregnant with her 3rd child, accusing William Mitchel to be the father. She further stated that Samuel Garrat, father of her second child about three years ago [is this Mary?] 'has gone long ago' to England. On 7 Aug 1842 she appeared again, still accusing WIlliam Mitchel, who acknowledged his guilt. As this was a trilapse [new word on me] Elizabeth was ordered to attend the Presbytery of Stranraer for discipline. On 13 Nov 1842 WIlliam Mitchel appeared and was rebuked and restored to privileges. Elizabeth Skilling 'is generally believed to be a widow' state the session records.

This third child is probably John. I cannot find an appearance at the Kirk Session for Elizabeth and a first child unless that was the 1833 appearance. [William McCracken was born in 1833[. The Kirk Session Minutes on SP only go up to 1845 for Ballantrae. So there are no records for any appearances of Elizabeth regarding James Shaw Skilling b ca 1847 [who stated on his marriage that his mother was Janet Skilling, but maybe she brought him up...] and Andrew Skilling b ca 1850/1.

Happy Birthday, Josey  :-*

Well done on finding those Kirk records. Pity SP only have them up to 1845.

Could they go later? I came across this entry https://catalogue.nrscotland.gov.uk/nrsonlinecatalogue/browseDetails.aspx?reference=CH2/629& Not sure whether they would hold what you need around 1850-1 for Andrew's record (if any).

Added: According to notes here www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/Ballantrae,_Ayrshire,_Scotland_Genealogy the minutes of the Sessions post 1845 have not survived it seems.

All very confusing.

This https://catalogue.nrscotland.gov.uk/nrsonlinecatalogue/overview.aspx?st=1&tc=y&tl=n&tn=n&tp=n&k=ballantrae&ko=a&r=ch2&ro=s&df=&dt=&di=y is the full National Records of Scotland catalogue listing for Ballantrae Church of Scotland CH2/629.

However there are also listings of the records of Ballantrae Free Church https://catalogue.nrscotland.gov.uk/nrsonlinecatalogue/overview.aspx?st=1&tc=y&tl=n&tn=n&tp=n&k=ballantrae&ko=a&r=ch3%2f684&ro=s&df=&dt=&di=y CH3/684.

The item at FamilySearch refers to CH3/684 but not to CH2/629.

It does indeed appear that the minutes from 1845 onwards have not survived.

Thanks for good wishes and clarifications.

ADDED: In the 1841 census, Elizabeth aged 30 FS is living with William Mitchel aged 20 ag lab & John Skilling aged 15 ag lab in Currarie. John is her brother and William becomes father to Eilzabeth's son John. Interesting that Elizabeth does not seem to name her sons after their putative fathers.
